Mcdohl

Or we call him 'Hero' Mcdohl in Gensui (short for Gensou Suikoden)    Why the name Hero?
It's because you get to name him, so usually, he's referred to as 'Hero' or 'Shujinko', which means 'main character' in Japanese.  In other words, he's quite nameless except for his surname.  He is the main character of Gensui 1, and also appears in Gensui 2 as one of the 108 characters (only if you've finished Gensui 1 and saved the data in your Gensui 2 game, which I can't get it to work!! My memory card must be faulty!)

Note: He's got a purple scarf tied into his head scarf!  How does he sew that in?  Or is it just stuffed in?

In Gensui 1:
Mcdohl is the son of the general Teo Mcdohl, and is sent to the palace to work one day.  During his errands, he meets Leknaat the Seer, one of the keepers of the Gate Rune, who forsees a little of his destiny.
There, a mysterious connection between Leknaat and Mcdohl is established...

Mcdohl is closest to Gremio.

Rune: Soul Eater

Gremio

In Gensui 1, Gremio says that he is indebt to the Mcdohl family as Teo Mcdohl saved his life.  In return, he helps to take care of the young Hero Mcdohl.  His loyalty only belongs to Hero Mcdohl, as he and Mcdohl leaves the castle together and disappears....

Gremio's character is possibly one of the most likeable ones in this series.
The cross scar and long hair reminds people of a particular red-headed rurouni, doesn't it?  Due to being a housekeeper for the Mcdohls, Gremio is totally
domestic, skilled in cooking, especially stews. He feels that Hero is like his little brother, or even his own son.  Thus, Gremio is probably the closest character to Mcdohl.  Oh, he fights great with an axe.

I think he makes a wonderful nanny for kids, and he calls Mcdohl 'Young Master' :P

Spoilers below: (highlight to see)
Gremio won't be with you for half of the story.  During the rescue of Dr Liukan at the prison, he dies saving the gang from man-eating spores.(ugh)  To ressurect him, you must get the the other 107 characters to stay alive.  Before the final battle, Leknaat will appear and resurrect Gremio.  This way, if you load your Gensui 1 game into Gensui 2, you'll be able to get both Mcdohl and Gremio.  When Gremio was resurrected, he was talking about unfinished laundry and a stew recipe he hasn't tried out yet.  It really makes me wonder what goes on in his mind before he died...

Cleo

Cleo also lives with the Mcdohls.  She works for them, together with Pahn, as bodyguards for the young Hero Mcdohl.  She is the only girl among the Mcdohl gang, but she sure packs a punch.  She is utterly loyal to Hero Mcdohl as well, like Gremio and Pahn.
She believes that she has to fight to protect the ones she love, even if she is a girl.
(that' the scene where she interacts with Hix at the Warriors village)

Rune: Fire Rune, given by Leknaat.

Pahn

The big guy of the group, I guess.  He, together with Cleo, protects the Mcdohl family.  At first, his loyalty strongly lies with Teo Mcdohl, but after a while, he decides that what he really wants to do is to be loyal to Hero Mcdohl, no matter how much trouble they will get into by opposing Teo.
He will be an important character as he'll fight Teo one-on-one at one point - make sure you don't lose him in the fight if you want your 107 characters to be intact!

He like to eat.  That's an obvious fact.  There's a particular liking for Gremio's cooking by the Mcdohl gang(Mcdohl, Gremio, Cleo and Pahn)...

Rune: Boar Rune

In Gensui 2:

Genkaku

Genkaku is the main character of Gensui 2,
He has no name, just like Mcdohl.  Genkaku is an orphan, adopted by a old man called Genkaku, whom Hero Genkaku and Nanami addresses as their grandfather.

Oh, by the way, both Mcdohl and Genkaku does not say anything by themselves in the game.  There's always an option or choices of replies your main character can say; in other words, the gamer has quite some control over the personality of Genkaku and Mcdohl.

I like Genkaku's weapons (what are they called?); it goes well with Nanami's weapons. ^-^  Genkaku looks more 'naive' than Mcdohl...or should I say more 'blur'?  Nevermind.  He's got his headband that looks like it's from the Monkey King Sun Wukong from Saiyuuki (Xi1 You2 Ji4)....

Genkaku is very close to Nanami Genkaku and Jowy Atriedes.

Rune: Bright Shield Rune

Nanami Genkaku

Hero Genkaku's older sister.  She and Hero was adopted by Genkaku, thus their surname.  She is not Hero's real sister as they're not of the same blood.  Nanami is very protective of her little brother and will do anything to protect him.
Nanami has a very optimistic, cheerful nature, which makes her very likeable.  She believes strongly in Hero Genkaku and will be with him no matter what happens since she's his sister.

She grew up with Hero and Jowy, the three of them taught how to fight by Genkaku.  Often bullying the younger two boys, she get scolded as well, of course.  She grows up to be very caring in her own way, but she has a desire - to get away from war, to just find a place where there is no war, where Hero and her and Jowy can live without all the fighting.

Spoiler: (highlight to see)
How can they kill Nanami~!!!!!!!  She's my beeeeeest fighting character in Suiko 2!! (so suiko 2 is my first game, and I didn't know they kill off characters like flies)
Anyway, Nanami dies protecting her brother from an arrow and dies a slow death like Gremio in Gensui 1...A tragic character who links Jowy and Hero together again for a while by her death.  I don't know if she can be resurrected...oh, she can be ressurected?  Thanks Rei-chan for telling me.^_^  And thanks FA-san for correcting me.  Anyways, Nanami only dies if you didn't get the happy ending, then.

Jowy Atriedes

Jowy (or Joey, Joy, however you spell it) comes from a rich family.  He grew up with Nanami and Hero Genkaku in Kyaro and are very close to both of them.  He considers Hero and himself to be best friends.  He is also quite protective over Hero Genkaku.

It is easy to see how close he is to Hero and Nanami as he regards them as family.
His own family disowned him and there is an air of solitude around him throughout the game when he leaves Hero Genkaku in pursuit of his own goals.

Rune: Black Sword Rune

Spoilers: (highlight to see)
Jowy is another tragic, tragic character.  All in all, he and Hero are after the same aim but with different methods.  In the end of my story (I obviously didn't get the best ending), he dies from over-usage of the black sword rune.  He's obviously a lonely person, but he seeks family - he finds a little girl Pilika, who helped look after him when he fell off a cliff into the river.  Pilika, however is soon haunted by war - she becomes mute when her village is destroyed. Jowy is very protective of Pilika, which could be a driving force for him to pursue his goal of uniting all the countries together.  He takes over Luca Blight by marrying Jillia Blight, Luca's sister.  In doing so, he gives up his surname as well.  His methods are more cruel than Genkaku's, such as sacrificing his own wife(well, it's only a doll actually, stated at the end of the game, so he's just using tactics...) to boost the morale of the soldiers (reminds me of Yang Gui Fei).  The only difference he has in war is that he does not have companions to help him, forcing him to use his Black Sword rune often to fight; thus his defeat. Umm...so he can get a happy ending too....@_@ Thanks ppl for mailing me!  I should replay the game....but I don't have Mcdohl...not so fun...*sigh* (memory card don't work)
